A little road trip through to…

West Texas - Big Bend National Park, Terlingua, and Marfa, Texas.

Scroll

West Texas is wild, with a remarkable National Park (Big Bend), the most artsy-quant town I’ve been to (Marfa), and some of the darkest night skies you can find in the contiguous United States.

Day 1 : Marfa

This was the first time my wife, Taylor, and I had ever travelled to the Big Bend National Park area so we wanted to take some time enjoying the trip in, which brought us to Marfa, Texas.

Marfa is a notorious artist enclave, with a population less than 2,000, and a gallery on every street corner. Seriously, there’s a gallery, or bespoke shop everywhere you look. We stopped through tons of shops (the Heights Grocer, New Star Grocery, and the Sentinel were favorites) and wandered the Chianti Foundation grounds and the Marfa Contemporary museums.

Day 2 : Terlingua & Big Bend

Day two is where we truly started the Big Bend portion of the adventure. We stayed in Terlingua the night before at Basecamp Terlingua — super cool accommodations — but left early for a sunrise hike up the Lost Mine Trail at the heart of the Chisos Basin. This was an epic place for sunrise and maybe the ultimate way for us to get our first real daylight look at the park.

Day 3 : Big Bend

Did I mention the stars?? If not, look at the Andromeda galaxy!

Day 2.5 (overnight) was an incredible star night, so I captured it and we slept in. We watched the sunrise from Basecamp Terlingua and set of for a big day adventuring from the Santa Elena Canyon to the Grapevine Hills to the Ernst Tinaja slot canyon.
